Jamie Carragher has suggested that Darwin Nunez’s Liverpool future looks bleak, with the striker’s inconsistent performances leaving the Reds potentially looking to offload him before next season.

Nunez, signed from Benfica in 2022 for an initial £64 million, has struggled to find his footing at Anfield. Despite occasional flashes of brilliance, the Uruguayan forward has managed just three goals across all competitions this season. His inability to capitalize on opportunities, especially in the absence of the injured Diogo Jota, has drawn criticism.

In Liverpool’s recent 3-3 draw against Newcastle, Nunez squandered several key chances, prompting Ian Wright to comment during The Overlap: “I never know what is going to happen with Nunez when he goes through.”

Carragher joked about the striker’s unpredictable nature: “We said we don’t know what he is going to do, so how will the defenders? Nobody ever says that about a good player.” He added, “He cost £63 million with add-ons, but there’s no way he’s triggered the add-ons.”

Ian Wright echoed the sentiment, saying: “For that price, I would’ve thought we’d see a lot more by now. I don’t see him changing from what he is now.”

Carragher went a step further, suggesting that Liverpool may have already made their decision. “I’m not sure he will be here next season. I think Liverpool will move him on,” he said.

However, former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet offered a more optimistic take. Speaking to BetVictor, he urged Nunez to focus on composure and trust in his abilities. “He needs to relax and believe in himself,” Poyet said. “When you overthink, you force situations. For a striker, that’s even worse because it takes away your instincts.”

With time still on his side, Nunez’s future at Liverpool may depend on whether he can improve his consistency and capitalize on his undeniable potential.
