Jamie Carragher has expressed concern about Lisandro Martinez’s recent performances, warning Manchester United fans that the Argentine defender may be struggling to adapt under new manager Ruben Amorim.

Martinez initially silenced critics, including Carragher himself, who doubted the 5’9” centre-back could thrive in the Premier League after joining United from Ajax.

With a series of dominant, combative displays, Martinez quickly became a fan favorite, only to be hampered by injuries that interrupted his progress.

Amorim’s arrival has seen United switch to a 3-4-3 system, which should theoretically suit Martinez. His left-footed ability to step out of defense and play passes fits well in a back three, especially alongside two taller defensive partners.

However, Carragher believes the 26-year-old’s recent form raises questions, especially after an error-prone performance in United’s recent defeat to Tottenham.

Reflecting on the match, Carragher told Sky Sports:
“I thought Martinez would thrive in a back three. He had a strong first season, proving me wrong after I criticized his height, but he hasn’t looked as comfortable since Amorim came in. Last night’s performance was worrying.”

The defeat also highlighted challenges for newcomer Leny Yoro, who struggled with positioning on two of Tottenham’s goals. But Carragher suggested Martinez’s struggles are more concerning, given his experience:
“Yoro is young, and centre-back is an unforgiving position. Mistakes are expected as he learns, but Martinez’s errors are different. He missed key moments, like not following the run for the first goal or reading the overlap on the second.”

Martinez did deliver a decisive assist in the Manchester derby, but Carragher argues these moments are becoming rare under Amorim’s system:
“Amorim’s setup should elevate Martinez’s game. He’s got the protection of a back three and can focus on his strengths. Instead, he looks less assured, and that’s a worry for United fans.”

As Amorim continues to implement his tactical philosophy at United, the challenge remains for Martinez to rediscover the form that made him a defensive cornerstone during his early days at the club. For now, questions linger over whether the transition to the new system will ultimately benefit the Argentine defender.
