Jhon Duran’s high-profile move to Al-Nassr has sparked intense debate, with former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf calling it an “insane” decision.
The 21-year-old Colombian forward has officially left Aston Villa, with the Saudi club securing his signature for a reported €77 million plus add-ons, though financial details remain undisclosed.
Aston Villa confirmed the transfer in a statement, wishing Duran success in his next chapter. Since arriving from Chicago Fire FC II in 2023, Duran has netted 20 goals in 78 appearances, quickly rising as one of football’s most promising young talents. His performances also earned him 15 caps for Colombia, further elevating his reputation.
Now, Duran will link up with global stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane at Al-Nassr, who currently sit third in the Saudi Pro League.
His move follows failed negotiations with West Ham United last summer, where he was close to sealing a £35 million transfer before talks collapsed.
Despite stiff competition from Ollie Watkins at Aston Villa, Duran’s standout performances had reportedly drawn interest from Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United.
However, his decision to commit to Saudi Arabia at such a young age has baffled many, including Leboeuf, who voiced strong criticism. Speaking on ESPNFC, the former Chelsea man questioned why a 20-year-old would abandon top-level European football.
“At 20? No way. That’s crazy,” Leboeuf stated. “With all due respect, the Saudi League is for players near retirement. It’s not for a rising star. The Premier League is so much faster, more tactical. Why would he leave when clubs like Chelsea were interested?”
Leboeuf argued that young talents risk losing their competitive edge in such leagues, citing examples of players struggling to return to top European football. While acknowledging the financial security the move brings, he insisted that footballing ambition should take priority.
“This is irresponsible from his agent,” he added. “Football should come first. He’s too young to leave the top level.”
With Duran now settling in at Al-Nassr, only time will tell whether this move propels or stalls his promising career.
