Former Chelsea star Joe Cole has given his thoughts on the upcoming Manchester United vs. Chelsea clash, predicting a narrow 1-0 win for the Blues at Old Trafford.

Cole believes Chelsea, under new manager Enzo Maresca, is about “two years ahead” of Manchester United in terms of squad development.
Currently struggling in the 14th position, United recently dismissed manager Erik ten Hag, replacing him with Ruben Amorim, who will assume the role after his commitments with Sporting. For now, Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue as interim manager.
Cole praised Chelsea’s strong start to the season, suggesting that while United has faced setbacks, Maresca’s side has shown consistency and progression.
“Chelsea will enjoy the challenge, and while United will turn up, I fancy a 1-0 Chelsea win,” he said, acknowledging that Chelsea hasn’t won at Old Trafford since 2013.
One of Cole’s concerns lies with Reece James, Chelsea’s captain, who has faced recurring injuries. Cole suggests that Chelsea should manage James’ workload carefully, much like Wesley Fofana’s, who is limited to one match per week.
“Reece is an exceptional player, but his body needs time to strengthen. If Chelsea is cautious, he can return to being a world-class defender,” Cole noted.
Speculation is also brewing over Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres potentially joining United, especially given his strong performances in Europe. However, Cole remains skeptical about United granting Amorim significant influence in recruitment, considering the past issues experienced under Ten Hag.
“Manchester United’s new management structure, with Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox, is now more systemized, and any decision on Gyokeres would be carefully evaluated. United won’t repeat past mistakes by allowing a manager’s familiarity to drive signings,” Cole stated.
Cole concludes that Gyokeres is a promising talent on the radar of many Premier League clubs, but United will prioritize strategic recruitment over personal connections.
