Chelsea’s Premier League title hopes have taken a hit, with club legend John Obi Mikel expressing doubts about Nicolas Jackson’s ability to lead the attack.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel emphasized the need for reinforcements, pointing out that Chelsea’s recent slump highlights the inadequacy of relying on a single striker.
Jackson, who has netted nine league goals this season, has struggled to maintain form, scoring just once in his last six appearances.
Mikel believes this inconsistency underscores the need for Chelsea to pursue a proven goal-scorer, particularly in light of their failed bid to sign Victor Osimhen last summer.
“We’re creating chances and playing well, but we’re not clinical enough,” Mikel said. “Nicolas puts himself in the right positions, but he’s not scoring enough. He’s not the striker to win us the Premier League or secure major trophies.”
Mikel pointed to other Premier League forwards, such as Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, as examples of players making a decisive impact. He also highlighted Cole Palmer’s contributions, noting that the young midfielder has carried much of Chelsea’s offensive burden this season.
The former Chelsea midfielder called for healthy competition in the squad, drawing on his own experience with Didier Drogba, who thrived despite competing with high-profile signings such as Nicolas Anelka and Fernando Torres.
“Competition is good for the club and for the player,” Mikel said. “Drogba knew the importance of having top players around him. Nicolas shouldn’t take this personally—it’s about improving the team and helping him succeed.”
While Mikel remains skeptical that Chelsea will bolster their attack in the January transfer window, he insisted that signing a top-tier forward should be a priority next summer.
For Chelsea, the challenge now lies in finding the consistency needed to close the 10-point gap on league leaders Liverpool. Whether Jackson can rise to the occasion or if the club must look elsewhere remains to be seen
