Joshua Zirkzee’s tenure at Manchester United has been far from smooth. The Dutch forward, who joined from Bologna for £36 million in the summer, made an immediate impact with a goal on his Premier League debut against Fulham.

However, his performances since then have raised concerns, with no additional goals and diminishing playing time.

The 23-year-old has not started a Premier League match since a disappointing outing against Tottenham, where he was substituted at halftime in a 3-0 loss.

Critics, including club legend Paul Scholes, have questioned Zirkzee’s role in the team, adding pressure to his debut season in England.

Reunion with Thiago Motta at Juventus?

Reports from Gazzetta dello Sport indicate that Zirkzee is eager to leave United in January to reunite with Thiago Motta at Juventus.

The pair enjoyed a fruitful partnership at Bologna last season, where Zirkzee played a pivotal role in helping the team secure a Champions League spot for the first time in its history.

Motta, now managing Juventus, is keen to strengthen his squad during the January transfer window.

He reportedly views Zirkzee as a versatile option to complement or deputize for Dusan Vlahovic in the Bianconeri attack. Juventus are said to prefer an initial loan deal for the Dutchman.

Manchester United’s Dilemma

United’s stance on Zirkzee’s potential departure remains unclear. With limited options in attack, the club may hesitate to let the forward leave without securing a replacement.

Under new manager Ruben Amorim, Zirkzee has seen sporadic game time, including a late substitution appearance against Ipswich Town in the Premier League and a bench role in the Europa League win over Bodo/Glimt.

Amorim has expressed frustration with Zirkzee’s understanding of his tactical role. After the Ipswich match, where Zirkzee operated as a No. 10, Amorim commented:
“Josh has to understand that he has to go to the box to have the crosses. The system isn’t the issue—it’s about understanding the game and improving decision-making.”

A Future in Flux

Despite his struggles, Zirkzee’s talent remains evident. His form under Motta at Bologna last season showcased his potential, and a move to Juventus could provide the fresh start he needs. However, United’s thin attacking options may complicate his exit plans.

As January approaches, the next chapter in Zirkzee’s career will depend on how United navigates the transfer market and whether Juventus intensifies their pursuit of the Dutch striker.
