Lazio head coach Marco Baroni has shared his insights on what Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Ayodele-Bashiru must improve to become a world-class player.
Since joining Lazio on loan from Turkish side Hatayspor last summer, with an option to buy included in the deal, Ayodele-Bashiru has shown flashes of brilliance.
However, he is still in the process of adapting to the rigorous demands of Italian football, which is a significant transition from the style he is accustomed to.
As Lazio prepares for their UEFA Europa League clash against Twente, Baroni took the time to praise the young midfielder.
He acknowledged Ayodele-Bashiru’s potential but emphasized the necessity for him to enhance his mental game to elevate his performance to a higher level. “Dele is a strong player who will surely explode; he must have greater mental continuity,” Baroni stated.
This highlights the coach’s belief in Ayodele-Bashiru’s abilities, suggesting that a breakthrough is imminent, provided he can align his mindset with the speed and intensity of Serie A.
The coach elaborated that transitioning from one footballing culture to another can be challenging, particularly when it comes to the pace of thought required in Serie A.
“He comes from a different kind of football; it’s not easy to get into the speed of thought of Serie A,” Baroni noted.
The emphasis on mental reactivity suggests that while Ayodele-Bashiru possesses the physical attributes needed—such as speed and strength—he must refine his cognitive processes to think and act swiftly on the pitch.

“They are guys who need to be given time; we don’t have time, and I don’t like to talk about time,” he said.

However, Baroni believes that Ayodele-Bashiru’s development path is well defined. “There is a path to follow and respect when you move to a team like Lazio,” he explained.
