The Liverpool right-back has reportedly expressed his desire to make the switch and informed his current club of his intentions.
However, Liverpool swiftly rejected Real Madrid’s official approach for the 26-year-old, making it clear they won’t engage in any negotiations for a January move. According to The Times, the Anfield hierarchy rebuffed Madrid’s offer on Tuesday, further complicating the potential transfer.
Alexander-Arnold, whose contract expires at the end of the season, can begin talks with foreign clubs from January 1. While Madrid is keen to secure his services for the summer, a mid-season move now appears unlikely.
Meanwhile, Liverpool, currently leading the Premier League under Arne Slot, is eager to extend the England international’s stay but has yet to reach an agreement.
Football pundit Gary Lineker weighed in on the potential move, praising the idea of Alexander-Arnold joining Real Madrid on a free transfer at the end of the season. Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker said, “It’s a perfect fit.
Real Madrid thrives on free transfers lately. He’d shine alongside Jude Bellingham and wouldn’t face the same defensive scrutiny he does in England. Losing him would be a massive blow for Liverpool.”
A product of Liverpool’s academy, Alexander-Arnold has played 333 matches for the Reds, scoring 20 goals and providing 85 assists.
His accolades include the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Club World Cup, and Super Cup. The right-back also scored in Liverpool’s dominant 5-0 victory over West Ham at the London Stadium last weekend.
