Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has shared his insights on the future of Liverpool’s second-choice goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher. Murphy believes the talented Irishman is set to leave Anfield this summer in search of regular game time and has suggested Chelsea or Newcastle United as likely destinations.

Kelleher, 26, has impressed when called upon, especially during Alisson Becker’s injury absence earlier in the season. His standout performances included a crucial penalty save against Kylian Mbappe in Liverpool’s Champions League victory over Real Madrid. Despite his heroics, Kelleher has struggled for consistent minutes since Alisson’s return to fitness.

Liverpool has already lined up a summer replacement for their backup goalkeeper, with Georgian shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili set to join the squad from Valencia in a £29 million deal. This development all but confirms Kelleher’s departure, with Murphy expressing confidence in his ability to secure a move to a top Premier League club.

Speaking to OLBG, Murphy remarked, “Kelleher is an outstanding goalkeeper and deserves the chance to be a No. 1. My understanding is that he’ll leave Liverpool, and there won’t be a shortage of offers.”

Chelsea, currently relying on Robert Sanchez, and Newcastle, with Nick Pope battling form and injuries, have both been identified as potential destinations.

Murphy acknowledged that while Sanchez has shown improvement, Chelsea could benefit from competition for their starting spot. Similarly, Newcastle’s aspirations for consistent silverware could lead them to consider Kelleher as an upgrade in goal.

Having made 61 appearances for Liverpool since his debut in 2020, Kelleher has established himself as a dependable option between the posts. However, with his path to regular first-team football at Anfield blocked, the Republic of Ireland international may view a move as the next logical step in his career.

As Liverpool continues to chase the Premier League title under Arne Slot, Kelleher’s role is likely to remain limited. Liverpool’s recent 2-0 win over Brentford showcased their resilience in the title race, but it’s clear the club is preparing for life with Mamardashvili as Alisson’s understudy.

Kelleher’s potential move to either Chelsea or Newcastle would not only elevate his career but also provide these clubs with a dependable and skilled presence in goal. With the summer transfer window approaching, all eyes will be on where the talented goalkeeper lands next.
