Rio Ngumoha made history on Saturday, becoming the youngest player ever to start a game for Liverpool at just 16 years and 135 days. The record-breaking forward played in the Reds’ FA Cup third-round clash against Accrington Stanley, earning widespread praise from fans who called him a “quality baller” and “the best player on the pitch.”

Ngumoha, wearing the No.73 shirt, primarily operates as a left-winger. Despite turning 16 only last August, he has already been training with Liverpool’s senior team and starring for their U18 squad.

This season, he has made 13 appearances, provided four assists, and was included in the first-team bench for Liverpool’s Carabao Cup victory against Southampton. He also represents England at the U17 level, earning three caps so far.

However, Ngumoha’s career could have unfolded differently. Previously a standout at Chelsea’s academy, he scored in their U17 Premier League Cup final win over Wolves last April. Chelsea saw him as a future star but failed to secure a new contract, leading to his free transfer to Liverpool last summer.

The move reportedly angered Chelsea, who are now said to have banned scouts from Liverpool and Manchester United from attending their academy matches.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who handed Ngumoha his debut, expressed his excitement, saying: “It’s special when a young player makes his debut. Ngumoha isn’t afraid to showcase his strengths, especially in one-on-one situations. I hope he shines today.”

Ngumoha’s confidence matches his potential. The teenager has publicly stated his goal of winning the Ballon d’Or, saying, “I believe I can be one of the best players in the world. Bad games happen, but resilience and self-belief are everything. I put bad form behind me and work harder.”

Slot acknowledged the young forward’s aspirations but advised caution, saying, “He’s at a club where players can win the Ballon d’Or, but it’s far too early for that. Let’s focus on the game today.”

With his debut and bold ambitions, Rio Ngumoha has set himself on a path that Liverpool fans hope will lead to legendary status.
