Liverpool are being encouraged to make a bold move for Manchester City defender Kyle Walker, who is reportedly seeking a transfer this January. The 34-year-old England right-back is said to be eyeing opportunities abroad after expressing his desire to leave the Premier League champions.
Pep Guardiola, City’s manager, confirmed Walker’s intentions following his absence from the club’s 8-0 FA Cup victory over Salford City, despite City dealing with defensive injuries.
Walker, a key player with six Premier League titles to his name, has 18 months left on his contract but recently met with City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, to discuss his future.
“Two days ago, Kyle asked to explore options to play abroad,” Guardiola revealed. “He’s been integral to our success, but he feels it’s time to explore other opportunities for his final years. While we’re open to his departure, nothing is finalized yet.”
Clubs in Saudi Arabia and Serie A side AC Milan are reportedly interested in Walker, but former Wales striker Dean Saunders believes Liverpool should act fast. With speculation growing about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential move to Real Madrid, Saunders suggested Walker could fill the void at Anfield.
“If Trent leaves, why not sign Kyle Walker?” Saunders said on talkSPORT. “He’s still quick, experienced, and capable of slotting into Liverpool’s team—or any top Premier League side. He’d even strengthen Arsenal or Chelsea.”
Real Madrid are rumored to have had a £20m bid for Alexander-Arnold rejected by Liverpool but remain determined to secure the England star. Meanwhile, Walker has played over 300 games for Manchester City since joining from Tottenham in 2017.
His impressive trophy haul includes six Premier League titles, a Champions League medal, two FA Cups, and four League Cups.
Walker’s possible departure signifies the end of a successful chapter at City and could pave the way for new challenges abroad. Whether Liverpool or another club will step in remains to be seen, but his experience and pace continue to make him an attractive prospect.
