Liverpool’s highly anticipated Premier League showdown against Manchester United is under threat as Merseyside braces for severe weather this weekend.

Mohamed Salah has hinted at a potential exit from Liverpool as contract talks stall, adding an extra layer of uncertainty ahead of the match. His future with the club could be a focal point, especially as Liverpool aim to extend their lead in the title race.

Earlier in the week, the north-west region was hit by flooding, and the Met Office has now issued an amber weather warning, signaling more disruptive weather over the next 24 hours. On Sunday morning, a Safety Advisory Group meeting is expected to determine the match’s fate. Representatives from both clubs, Merseyside Police, and Liverpool City Council will assess conditions.

With temperatures dropping below freezing near Anfield during the early hours of Sunday, the safety of fans traveling to the stadium is a top priority. Liverpool are already juggling a congested schedule, competing in three cup competitions, and the ongoing weather challenges may further disrupt their plans.

The postponement of the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park earlier this season due to Storm Darragh is still fresh in the minds of fans and officials alike, further highlighting the unpredictable nature of this winter season.

The Met Office has warned of snow, freezing rain, and hazardous travel conditions in affected areas, stating: “Snow will become persistent and locally heavy, with freezing rain likely to cause ice buildup in some regions. While most areas will see 3-7cm of snow, higher elevations could receive 15-30cm. Milder air will bring a rapid thaw by Sunday morning, potentially worsening flooding risks.”

Liverpool’s efforts to play through thick fog on Boxing Day against Leicester City are still remembered, with the Reds winning 3-1 despite the challenging conditions. However, with freezing rain and flooding posing even greater risks, officials will need to carefully assess the safety of players and fans before making a final decision on Sunday’s game.
