Liverpool manager Arne Slot has acknowledged that his team faces “quite some issues” following the international break as they gear up for a crucial clash with Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday. Despite a strong start to the season, with six wins from seven matches, the Reds must navigate selection challenges against an in-form Chelsea side that hasn’t lost since the season opener.
Goalkeeper Alisson Becker is sidelined until next month due to a hamstring injury, forcing Caoimhín Kelleher to step in. “That’s a blow for him and for us,” Slot said, praising Alisson’s contributions to the club. “The good thing is that Caoimhín has performed well in the past and this season too.”
Slot highlighted the uncertainty surrounding several players returning from national duty. “We’ve got quite some issues with players coming back. Today’s the first time they’re all in training together, so we’ll assess their conditions after the session,” he explained.
He mentioned specific players who had issues, including Alexis Mac Allister, Kostas Tsimikas, and Wataru Endo, noting their recent absences and conditions.
Additionally, the club is dealing with contract situations for key players Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, all of whom have deals expiring next summer. Slot refrained from providing updates on their negotiations but acknowledged the ongoing discussions. “It’s good that everyone wants their contracts renewed because it means they’re doing well,” he concluded.
As Liverpool prepares for the match, Slot hopes to have his squad in the best possible shape to face Chelsea.
