Despite intense interest from top clubs, including Arsenal, the French forward’s move to Anfield collapsed at the last minute, but Chelsea swooped in to sign him.
The Liverpool Medical Failure and Chelsea’s Last-Minute Offer
In the summer of 2014, Liverpool triggered an £8.5m release clause in Remy’s contract with QPR after an impressive season on loan at Newcastle United.
He even joined the squad for Liverpool’s pre-season tour in the United States, but his medical failed, leaving the Reds to pull out of the deal.
QPR manager Harry Redknapp was stunned by the news, stating that Remy was “very fit” and couldn’t understand why the transfer had fallen through.
While disappointed, Remy didn’t let the setback stop him. Chelsea quickly showed interest, and after some back-and-forth, the striker was on his way to Stamford Bridge. However, Arsenal was not ready to give up just yet.
Arsenal’s Late Interest and Remy’s Decision to Choose Chelsea
As Remy was preparing to finalize his move to Chelsea, Arsenal made a late attempt to hijack the deal. His agent informed him of Arsenal’s sudden interest, but by then, Remy had already passed his medical with Chelsea and was on the verge of signing.
Reflecting on the decision, Remy explained, “I went with Chelsea because I just thought that Arsenal should have manifested themselves long before the end of the transfer window.”
A Challenging Move That Led to Success at Chelsea
Although Remy’s time at Chelsea didn’t see him as a first-choice striker, he did help the club win the Premier League and the League Cup in his first season under José Mourinho. He scored 12 goals in 47 appearances, contributing to the team’s success in his limited role.
Despite the complications surrounding his transfer, Remy does not regret his decision, saying, “I won titles with Chelsea, but yes, it was a very complicated move behind the scenes!”
Remy’s Legacy at Chelsea
Remy’s time at Chelsea was marked by moments of glory, even if he wasn’t the star of the show.
His experience at the club helped cement his place in Premier League history, and while his career in England didn’t go exactly as planned, he’s proud of the titles he won during his time at Stamford Bridge.
