Loic Remy Urges Christopher Nkunku to Leave Chelsea for Fresh Start

Loic Remy has suggested that Christopher Nkunku should leave Chelsea this summer after his £52 million transfer has failed to live up to expectations.

Nkunku arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2023 following an impressive spell at RB Leipzig, but injuries hampered his debut season.

While he has remained fit this campaign, Enzo Maresca has largely favored Nicolas Jackson in attack, limiting Nkunku to just three Premier League starts.

Despite restricted minutes, the 27-year-old has still managed 13 goals and four assists across all competitions.

However, his underwhelming performance in Chelsea’s FA Cup defeat to Brighton has raised doubts about his long-term role at the club.

Speaking to Plejmo.com, Remy expressed his belief that a move away could be the best solution for his fellow Frenchman.

“Christopher Nkunku’s move to Chelsea hasn’t gone to plan. He had a serious injury and hasn’t been a regular starter. There was massive expectation because of his form in Germany, and he’s been unlucky,” Remy said.

“It looked like he could’ve left in the transfer window, and then he didn’t look himself in the FA Cup exit. I think it would be best for him to get a fresh start in the summer, whether that’s a loan or a permanent move. Sometimes things don’t work out, and it’s wrong to force it.”

With Nicolas Jackson also facing criticism, Chelsea are reportedly eyeing a new striker, with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen—a long-term target—being linked to the club.

Remy, who played alongside Osimhen at Lille, believes he would be an ideal fit for Chelsea but also highlighted Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta as another strong option.

“Mateta has the profile to thrive at Chelsea. He isn’t the type of player to impress you technically, but he is always there and loves scoring goals. He’s so annoying to play against as a defender,” Remy added.

Mateta has been in prolific form, scoring 23 Premier League goals over the past year—behind only Erling Haaland, Alexander Isak, Cole Palmer, and Mohamed Salah. His performances have attracted interest from top clubs, with Crystal Palace reportedly valuing him at £50 million.

As Chelsea look to reshape their attacking options, both Nkunku’s future and the pursuit of a new striker will be key storylines to watch this summer.
