The €60m midfielder, previously set to join Liverpool, rejected their advances and signed a new contract with Real Sociedad in the summer.
However, with Manchester City keen to strengthen their midfield in January, Pep Guardiola’s side are reportedly preparing to challenge their Premier League rivals for his signature.
City’s Urgent Need for Midfield Reinforcements
Manchester City, dealing with an injury to star midfielder Rodri, are keen to strengthen their midfield options in January. Zubimendi, who recently helped Spain win Euro 2024, has long been on their radar.
At just 25 years old, Zubimendi is seen as a potential long-term solution for Pep Guardiola’s side, with his ball-playing ability and defensive skills making him an ideal fit in City’s system.
Arsenal and Liverpool Remain Interested
Despite signing a new contract with Real Sociedad over the summer, Zubimendi remains a target for several Premier League clubs. Liverpool were previously in talks to meet his €60m release clause, but he opted to stay in Spain.
Arsenal, who have also tracked the midfielder, are reportedly still monitoring the situation and could make a move if the opportunity arises.
Manchester City Eye Ederson as Backup
Along with Zubimendi, Manchester City are reportedly interested in Atalanta’s Ederson, another defensive midfielder who has impressed in Serie A.
Ederson’s performances have earned him international recognition with Brazil, and his versatile, box-to-box style has caught the attention of both Manchester United and City. With both clubs keen on bolstering their midfield, Ederson could be another player in the mix for Guardiola’s plans.
