Gary Pallister, a Manchester United legend, has dismissed Ruben Amorim’s claim that the current Manchester United team is the worst in the club’s storied history. Amorim, the successor to Erik ten Hag, made his remarks following United’s disappointing 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
United have endured a tough start to the season under Amorim, with only two wins in their first nine Premier League games. Amorim described the current team as “the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United,” emphasizing the need to acknowledge their struggles to overcome them.
However, Pallister believes that the club has experienced darker times. Reflecting on the 1989-90 season under Sir Alex Ferguson, Pallister recalled a precarious April match against Millwall that could have seen United slip into the bottom three.
He said: “I’d say I have actually played in a United team that was worse than this one, despite having players like Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes, and Paul Ince. That team went on to win the Premier League in 1993, so it’s not all doom and gloom.”
Amid the challenges, Pallister praised Harry Maguire for his recent performances, which have silenced critics and restored some stability to the squad.
Pallister noted: “Harry Maguire’s career turnaround has been hugely impressive. Despite early struggles and criticism, he remained professional, declined a move to West Ham, and worked hard to regain his form. He’s proven his quality in an England shirt and now as a leader in this United team.”
While Pallister acknowledged the club’s current challenges, he remains optimistic that the quality within the squad can lead to a turnaround, just as past United teams have demonstrated.
