Erik ten Hag has confirmed Manchester United’s continued interest in Alvaro Fernandez, following his impressive form after a permanent move to Benfica this summer.

Fernandez, who joined United from Real Madrid at 16, spent time on loan at Preston and Granada but never made a first-team appearance at Old Trafford. He signed with Benfica for £5 million after a loan spell last January and has since become a crucial part of their squad.

His stellar performances in Portugal have been frustrating for United fans, as the club struggles with a left-back shortage due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Despite letting Fernandez go, United included a buy-back clause in his transfer, keeping their options open.

Speaking at a press conference, Ten Hag explained: “The process was perfect. We loaned him out, he returned, and then he went to Granada, where he didn’t play much. We’ve observed him and had the chance to sell, but we kept a buy-back clause, so we maintain control. I think it’s what he needed.”

With Fernandez thriving at Benfica, United are closely monitoring his progress and could exercise their buy-back option if his impressive form continues.
