Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has expressed his support for his players’ decision not to wear specially designed LGBTQ+ jackets ahead of their Premier League match against Everton.

The gesture was intended to promote inclusivity, but the plan was altered to respect Noussair Mazraoui’s religious beliefs.
The jackets, developed in collaboration with Adidas, were meant to be worn as the players walked out at Old Trafford last Sunday. However, Mazraoui, a devout Muslim, informed his teammates that his faith prevented him from participating in the campaign. To avoid singling him out, the squad collectively chose not to wear the jackets.
Amorim praised the unity and empathy displayed by his team, describing the decision as a reflection of their values. “It was a group decision, as it should be,” Amorim said. “There are three key elements to balance: club values, religion, and team unity. The players stood together, prioritizing support for their teammate over individual opinions.”
Amorim emphasized the complexity of the situation. “This club represents inclusivity and respect, but we also respect Noussair’s religion and culture,” he explained. “The majority might believe in one thing, but when they saw one teammate potentially isolated, they chose solidarity. That’s the spirit of this team.”
When asked if similar situations could arise in the future, Amorim highlighted the importance of adaptability. “Who knows what will happen next year? We’ll address it when the time comes. It’s not about changing someone’s beliefs but finding a way to uphold both club values and personal convictions.”
Manchester United’s stance underscores their commitment to respect and inclusivity, both within their squad and in their wider campaigns. Despite the adjustments, the club remains steadfast in its advocacy for equality while recognizing the importance of individual beliefs.
