While United remain in negotiations with Lecce for Patrick Dorgu, Fernandez is now being considered as a backup option. According to the Daily Mail, Benfica could exercise a £15m buy-back clause for Fernandez, valid until January 2026.

United scouts watched Fernandez in action against Casa Pia on Saturday. The 21-year-old, who joined Benfica permanently in May 2024 after a loan spell, was a United player between 2020 and 2024. During his time at Old Trafford, Fernandez did not feature in the first team and instead gained experience on loan at Preston North End, Granada, and Benfica.

Currently, Patrick Dorgu remains United’s priority, but their initial offer of £16.8m plus £4.2m in add-ons was rejected. A second bid for the Lecce defender may still be in the works.

Meanwhile, Fernandez has been a standout player for Benfica this season, with a €50m release clause in his contract. United might aim to secure him before other clubs act on his growing reputation. The club’s financial flexibility has improved after loaning Antony to Real Betis, potentially aiding their pursuit of either Dorgu or Fernandez.
