Tyrell Malacia, Manchester United’s first signing under Erik ten Hag, is poised to leave the club during the January transfer window. New head coach Ruben Amorim has reportedly sanctioned the 25-year-old defender’s exit, opening the door for a loan move.

Malacia joined United in 2022 from Feyenoord for £13 million, making an impressive debut season capped by a Carabao Cup victory.

However, a severe knee injury at the end of that campaign derailed his progress, sidelining him for 18 months. Having returned to action in November, the Dutch international has since made five appearances, but it appears he is not part of Amorim’s long-term plans.

Reports from the Netherlands suggest that Malacia was informed on Friday that he is free to seek a new club. While his next destination remains uncertain, multiple clubs from Europe’s top leagues have expressed interest in the versatile left-back.

Malacia’s departure could leave United vulnerable in the left-back position. With Luke Shaw struggling with injuries and Diogo Dalot often deputizing as a left-wingback, options are limited. Amorim has also relied on Noussair Mazraoui to cover the role when needed.

The coach previously expressed concerns about Malacia’s fitness and ability to adapt to his high-pressing tactics.

“I like to have the squad fit. Tyrell Malacia, Harry Maguire, Mason Mount, and Leny Yoro are all on time limits,” Amorim remarked. “We’re managing games with a different methodology and more pressing, which increases the risk of injuries. If there’s any concern, they won’t play.”

It is unclear whether Malacia will feature in United’s upcoming match against Brighton. Despite his potential departure, the Red Devils may be taking a gamble, as injuries in the squad could leave them exposed.

As Malacia seeks a fresh opportunity to reignite his career, the January transfer window may provide the perfect stage for his next chapter.
