Ruben Amorim is set to include 16-year-old defender Godwill Kukonki in Manchester United’s squad for their Premier League fixture against Ipswich Town this afternoon.

This marks the Portuguese manager’s debut match in charge at Old Trafford after a week of preparation at Carrington.

Amorim’s squad selection has been influenced by injuries and international commitments, giving young players a chance to shine in first-team training. Among those stepping up is Kukonki, a versatile left-footed center-back who has reportedly impressed during sessions.

A Rising Star

Kukonki has made a name for himself in United’s academy system, standing out for the Under-18s this season. The towering 6ft 5in defender has featured in eight of nine league games for the unbeaten side, contributing to an incredible seven clean sheets. His versatility, allowing him to operate at left-back, has drawn comparisons to Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol.

Having recently transitioned into the Under-21s squad, Kukonki’s physical presence and technical ability have made him an appealing option for Amorim as he experiments with a new 3-4-3 formation. Injuries to senior defenders like Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, and Harry Maguire further opened the door for Kukonki to train with the first team.

Manager’s Vision

Amorim has a track record of trusting youth, evidenced during his time at Sporting CP, where he handed senior debuts to nine teenagers. In a press conference earlier this week, the manager emphasized the importance of integrating academy players into the first team.

“You need young guys from the academy because they feel the club differently,” Amorim said. “Financial fair play is also a factor, but most importantly, academy players bring history and a sense of belonging to the team.”

Squad Role Against Ipswich

While Kukonki’s inclusion in the squad is a milestone, it is unlikely he will make his Premier League debut today. Amorim is expected to rely on more experienced players in his first outing, with Luke Shaw potentially stepping into a central defensive role when fit. However, Kukonki’s call-up signals a clear intention to develop and promote youth talent under Amorim’s leadership.

As Manchester United embarks on a new chapter, Kukonki’s progression reflects a broader commitment to building for the future. The Ipswich match could mark the beginning of an exciting journey for the promising defender.
