Ederson, the Brazilian goalkeeper, missed City’s recent 2-1 loss to Aston Villa, with Stefan Ortega stepping in. Nunes was also absent from the squad after playing left-back during the team’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on December 15.
Speaking on Tuesday, Pep Guardiola provided an update on their fitness. “We train this afternoon, and we’ll see how many players are available,” he said. “Right now, I don’t know.”
On John Stones, who was substituted at halftime in the Villa game due to injury, Guardiola added: “I haven’t spoken with the doctor, but if he couldn’t continue, it means he’s likely not ready. We’ll see.”
Guardiola also shared that Manchester City will train on Christmas Day evening in preparation for the match. “Today [Christmas Eve], players are at home with their families. Tomorrow morning, they’ll be with their families again, and at night, they’ll join training. Hopefully, they want to be here because it’s our responsibility.”
Everton faces their own setbacks, with Ashley Young suspended and Dwight McNeil unlikely to play. “Youngy is out due to a neck issue from the Chelsea game, though it’s not serious,” manager Sean Dyche explained. “Dwight is touch-and-go and probably won’t make it, but we hope he’ll be back soon.
