Arsenal’s pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi may come to a disappointing end, as Manchester City reportedly prepares to activate the Spaniard’s £50 million release clause.

The 25-year-old midfielder, a long-time target for the Gunners, has been a standout performer for Real Sociedad in La Liga and has established himself as a key figure for Spain’s national team.

However, Arsenal’s hopes of securing Zubimendi have been dealt a blow, with the London Standard reporting that Premier League rivals City are stepping up efforts to sign him in the January transfer window.

City’s move for Zubimendi comes amid an underwhelming season for Pep Guardiola’s squad. After a 1-1 Boxing Day draw against Everton, Guardiola admitted the need to bolster his squad in the winter window.

“Even the players feel we need to add some reinforcements,” Guardiola said. “But the goal isn’t just a short-term fix; we aim to bring players who will contribute for the next three, four, or five years.”

Despite Real Sociedad’s director of football Roberto Olabe expressing confidence that Zubimendi will remain with the club in January, City’s interest appears serious. Olabe recently remarked, “Martin has shown loyalty and commitment beyond his release clause. I don’t anticipate any surprises this January.”

Zubimendi, who has spent his entire career at Real Sociedad after progressing through their academy, has made 209 appearances for the club across all competitions. His composure, tactical intelligence, and ability to dictate play from midfield have made him a highly sought-after talent.

Previously linked with Liverpool, Zubimendi rejected a move to Anfield last summer. Now, City looks set to beat Arsenal to his signature, a development that could significantly shape the title race as both clubs vie for Premier League supremacy.
