Ruben Amorim has urged Manchester United to sign Viktor Gyokeres in January, signaling his growing frustration with the team’s dire form.

Since taking over as manager in November, Amorim has struggled, managing just seven points in eight league games. A recent 2-0 defeat to Newcastle marked United’s third consecutive home loss, a feat not seen in 45 years, and capped off their worst league month since 1962, with five defeats.
Despite insisting on patience to rebuild the club, Amorim appears to have underestimated the scale of the challenge. His solution? Reuniting with Gyokeres, the prolific striker he coached at Sporting Lisbon.
The Swedish international has scored an astonishing 70 goals in 77 appearances under Amorim, including 27 in 27 games this season, and famously netted a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League.
United had planned to wait until summer to pursue Gyokeres, partly due to Amorim’s initial stance against signing his former players during the winter window. However, their recent struggles seem to have forced a change of plans. Reports suggest Amorim has urged United to activate Gyokeres’ £80m release clause this month.
Arsenal has also shown interest in the 26-year-old striker, but United are reportedly leading the race due to Amorim’s influence.
United’s forwards have failed to deliver, with Rasmus Hojlund scoring just two goals in 14 league games and Joshua Zirkzee managing only four in 26 appearances. Amorim is open to offloading Zirkzee in January, while Marcus Rashford has hinted at seeking a new challenge.
As United prepares for tough clashes against Liverpool at Anfield and Arsenal in the FA Cup, Amorim’s push to secure Gyokeres could define their season.
