Ruben Amorim has warned that Manchester United are now in a fight against relegation, a situation he admits is both embarrassing and alarming.

The Red Devils suffered a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle at Old Trafford on Monday, marking their fifth loss in six Premier League games. This latest setback leaves United in 14th place, just seven points above the relegation zone.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has described United’s current form as “relegation form,” and Amorim agrees with the assessment. Speaking to Sky Sports, the Portuguese manager acknowledged the gravity of the situation: “It’s clear we are in a relegation battle, and we have to fight.

This is one of the most difficult moments in Manchester United’s history. We must confront it with honesty and work hard for the next game.”

In the post-match press conference, Amorim admitted the embarrassment of being a United manager discussing relegation. “Yes, it’s embarrassing, and I take responsibility. The team hasn’t improved; we’re a little lost right now,” he confessed.

“It’s a hard moment, but we must face tough situations in life. I don’t want to make excuses. People are tired of excuses at this club. That’s why I mention relegation—this club needs a shock to move forward.”

Newcastle secured victory with goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton in the first 20 minutes, exposing United’s fragile defense. Amorim pointed to the team’s packed schedule and the lack of time to properly implement his 3-4-3 system.

“Right now, it’s tough to turn things around because we don’t have time to train and solidify our playing style. In bad situations, you need that foundation to rely on,” he said.

Despite some attempts at a comeback in the second half, United’s efforts fell short. “We were close to scoring once, but they were better. Yes, we’re too easy to score against, but failing to convert chances also makes a difference,” Amorim added.

The road ahead only gets tougher for Manchester United. Their next challenge is a trip to Anfield to face league leaders Liverpool on 5 January, a match that could further deepen their crisis.
