The post, which appeared on United’s Facebook at 19:38 GMT, urged supporters to purchase the ‘$REDDEVILS’ fan token, promising exclusive perks such as limited-edition merchandise and VIP fan experiences.
While the post on Instagram was quickly removed, it remained visible on Facebook until 23:00 GMT on Friday.
The club later confirmed the hack in a message on their official Discord channel, advising fans not to engage with any suspicious activity related to the scam token.
“Our Facebook and Instagram accounts have been compromised,” the message read. “We are working to resolve the issue and will update you once it’s rectified.”
This incident follows a similar attack in November 2020 when United’s systems were targeted by organized cybercriminals.
Despite the security breach, the club is currently focused on their upcoming match against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
