Manchester United may have just let go of a key talent, according to former PSV and Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat. The Dutch coach believes United made a mistake in loaning out Tyrell Malacia, a player he describes as a “real winner.”
Malacia, 25, recently completed a move to PSV Eindhoven for the rest of the season. After spending 18 months sidelined with a serious knee injury, he managed eight appearances under Ruben Amorim before opting for a loan move in search of more game time.
His PSV debut came over the weekend, playing 78 minutes in a 1-1 draw against Willem II. However, he remained an unused substitute in Tuesday’s Champions League play-off first leg, where PSV fell 2-1 to Juventus.

Advocaat, who worked with Malacia at Feyenoord, is confident the full-back will prove his quality in the Eredivisie. “I know he was out for a long time at United, but this boy has a good head on his shoulders,” Advocaat told Voetbal International.
He recalled Malacia’s time at Feyenoord, where he thrived despite financial constraints and a youthful squad. “Guys like Orkun Kokcu, Lutsharel Geertruida, and Malacia showed real professionalism. They came from the academy, earned their place, and stayed. Tyrell is a true competitor—I never had to say much to him.”
Advocaat believes PSV is the perfect place for Malacia to regain his top form. “He fits their style, he’s strong on the ball, and he can contribute both defensively and in attack. He might not be the tallest, but he never backs down from a challenge.”

For Malacia, the move represents a fresh start. “I’m just happy to play good football again,” he said after signing with PSV. “I’ve been out for a long time, but I’m fit now. The injury made me stronger, both physically and mentally. I’m ready to win trophies with PSV.”
With his determination and Advocaat’s faith in his abilities, Malacia’s return to Dutch football could mark the beginning of a resurgence in his career.
