Ten Hag was informed of the club’s decision on Monday, with Ruud van Nistelrooy, part of the coaching staff since summer, stepping in as interim manager.

United’s poor form has seen them slide to 14th place in the Premier League, with just one win in their last five league games.

Despite achieving a third-place finish and a Carabao Cup victory in his debut season, Ten Hag’s second season started poorly.

Heavy defeats to Liverpool and Tottenham, as well as disappointing Europa League performances, led the club’s leadership, under Sir Jim Ratcliffe, to take decisive action.

United invested over £200 million on new signings this summer but struggled to see improvements, culminating in Ten Hag’s exit.

Van Nistelrooy is currently favored to secure the permanent role, while other notable names include Xavi Hernandez, Julian Nagelsmann, Gareth Southgate, and Thomas Frank. Here are the current odds:

  • Ruud van Nistelrooy: 5/4
  • Xavi Hernandez: 2/1
  • Julian Nagelsmann: 9/2
  • Gareth Southgate: 5/1
  • Thomas Frank: 8/1
  • Ruben Amorim: 9/1
  • Graham Potter: 11/1
  • Michael Carrick: 14/1
  • Kieran McKenna: 14/1
  • Roberto De Zerbi: 16/1

Xavi Hernandez and Thomas Frank are also prominent candidates, with Julian Nagelsmann on United’s radar for discussions. Potential younger options include former United staff Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

Van Nistelrooy’s tenure as interim manager begins with matches against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup and Chelsea in the Premier League, both at Old Trafford.
