Following Erik ten Hag’s abrupt departure on Monday due to United’s poor start, Amorim has emerged as the frontrunner to steer the team forward. However, finalizing the deal hasn’t been without hurdles. United is reportedly willing to meet Amorim’s £8.3 million release clause, but additional demands from Sporting have complicated matters.
The Portuguese club is requesting around £4.5 million more to release Amorim’s backroom staff, creating unexpected delays. To further complicate things, Amorim’s release clause includes a 30-day notice period. This clause could potentially delay his start until December, preventing him from taking immediate control.
Despite these setbacks, there are signs the deal might be closer than it seems. After Manchester United’s 5-2 EFL Cup win over Leicester City—led by interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy—INEOS director Sir Dave Brailsford, who’s closely involved with United, hinted at an agreement with Amorim. In response to fans asking for an update, Brailsford reportedly said, “Yeah, it’s done,” indicating that negotiations could be in the final stages.
If the deal is confirmed, Amorim’s debut might take place on November 24th against Ipswich. Meanwhile, Sporting prefers him to stay in Lisbon for three more games, meaning Van Nistelrooy will likely manage United’s matches against Chelsea, PAOK, and Leicester City. Whether Van Nistelrooy will stay on within Amorim’s coaching team remains uncertain.
As United fans await an official announcement, excitement builds around Amorim’s potential arrival, which could mark a new era for the club.
