Manchester United Slammed for Letting Angel Gomes Shine Elsewhere

Andy Cole has voiced his frustration over Manchester United’s decision to part ways with Angel Gomes, who has become a standout performer for Lille and recently earned his first call-up to the England squad.

Gomes joined United’s academy at just six years old, dedicating over a decade to developing his craft before debuting for the U18s at age 14.

In 2017, Gomes made history as the youngest recipient of United’s prestigious Academy Player of the Year award. That same year, he replaced club legend Wayne Rooney in his first-team debut, sparking hopes of a bright future.

However, opportunities dwindled under then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Despite the club’s efforts to secure his stay, Gomes rejected a contract extension and departed in 2020 for Lille in Ligue 1.

Since his move, Gomes has thrived. Over three seasons, he has amassed more than 100 appearances and become a pivotal figure for Lille. His impressive form earned him a place in the England squad, where he debuted under interim manager Lee Carsley.

Now, with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Gomes hopes to solidify his spot in Thomas Tuchel’s plans for the national team.

Reflecting on Gomes’ growth, Cole didn’t hold back: “I was really disappointed when Angel left United. He’s immensely talented, and the criticism about his size being unsuitable for the Premier League was nonsense. He’s proven his quality in France, made a great career for himself, and has even represented England. Fair play to him.”

When asked if Gomes could return to Old Trafford, Cole added, “If that ever happens, I have no doubts he would make United a better team.”

Cole also commented on United’s summer signing Joshua Zirzkee, who endured a 17-game goal drought before finally netting twice against Everton. Rumors have swirled about a potential Serie A move to Juventus for the forward, but Cole urged patience.

“Football is unpredictable,” Cole said. “Zirzkee has had a tough start, but adapting to the Premier League takes time. Scoring twice against Everton will boost his confidence, but it’s up to the manager to decide on his future.”

While United secured a convincing 4-0 victory over Everton last weekend, they were handed a 2-0 defeat by Arsenal midweek, leaving Ruben Amorim’s squad with much to ponder as the season progresses.
