Manchester United Slammed for Missing Out on Harry Kane and Declan Rice

Teddy Sheringham has criticized Manchester United’s transfer strategy, highlighting their failure to sign Harry Kane and Declan Rice.

He believes the club must return to recruiting “top players” who lead by example, a hallmark of their success under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Since Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, United have spent over £1.6 billion on players but have little silverware to show for it. Under Erik ten Hag alone, the club invested around £600 million on players like Antony, Mason Mount, Casemiro, and Andre Onana, yet none have justified their hefty price tags.

In January, United adopted a more cautious approach, focusing on optimizing the current squad under new manager Ruben Amorim.

Despite this shift, the club remains linked to high-profile signings, with positions like left wing-back and attack flagged as priorities for INEOS in upcoming windows.

Speaking on the Football’s Greatest podcast with Joe and Ashley Cole, Sheringham expressed concerns about the club’s recruitment since Ferguson’s departure.

“I’m optimistic about Amorim. I like his passion and the tenacity he instills in his teams,” Sheringham said. However, he emphasized the need for United to bring in elite players who can elevate the team. Also Manchester united are keen on bringing Victor Gyokeres the swedish striker from Sporting to balance the attack of Manchester united as Rashford exit the club

Sheringham cited missed opportunities with Kane and Rice as prime examples. “Top players like Harry Kane and Declan Rice were available in the last two years, but United weren’t even close to signing them.

Kane went to Bayern, and Rice joined Arsenal. Under Ferguson, those players would have been at Old Trafford without question.” Also Manchester united was Advised by Louis Saha to pursue Harry Kane instead of Victor Gyokeres

Reflecting on Ferguson’s legacy, Sheringham pointed out how the legendary manager secured stars like Roy Keane, Paul Ince, and Wayne Rooney. “Ferguson ensured the best talents chose United. That approach is missing now,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Sheringham believes Manchester United still holds global appeal. “The name still carries weight.

Fans worldwide look forward to Old Trafford fixtures. However, the club must restructure and reclaim its place at the top,” he added.

Sheringham remains optimistic but insists that without decisive action, the club risks falling further behind.
