Rio Ferdinand has criticized Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee, calling him “non-existent” for most of the team’s Europa League win over Rangers.
Bruno Fernandes was the hero for United, securing a late 2-1 victory at Old Trafford on Thursday.
The game took a dramatic turn when Jack Butland’s own goal gave Rangers the lead, only for Cyriel Dessers to equalize with a stunning strike in the 88th minute.
However, United responded quickly, with Fernandes volleying home Lisandro Martinez’s cross in stoppage time.
Zirkzee, who was given a rare start, struggled to make an impact. The Dutch international managed only two shots and four touches in the opposition penalty area before being replaced by Rasmus Hojlund in the 82nd minute.
Despite showing glimpses of his ability to link up play, Zirkzee failed to provide the goal-scoring threat United desperately needed.
TNT Sports commentator Ally McCoist noted: “I think Zirkzee did alright, but from Manchester United’s perspective, you’d want to see more of a goal threat despite his decent link-up play.”
Ferdinand shared a harsher view of the 23-year-old’s performance. “He was non-existent in the first half,” the former United defender said.
“He improved a bit in the second half but still wasn’t a real threat on goal. Thankfully, they managed to get the win.”
Since his £36 million move from Bologna in the summer, Zirkzee has struggled to find form, netting just four goals across all competitions.
His challenges have included being substituted after just 33 minutes in December’s clash with Newcastle, but he continues to receive support from fans and teammates.
Club captain Harry Maguire defended Zirkzee earlier this week, stating: “Josh is a good player.
You don’t play for Manchester United if you’re not good. He just needs to find belief and confidence within himself.”
Maguire also praised the fans’ unwavering support: “The fans have been amazing with him. They stick with us through tough times, and I’m sure Josh feels that support.”
While Zirkzee’s journey in England has been rocky, his moment of brilliance in the Arsenal game, where he converted a match-winning penalty, proved his potential.
The question remains whether he can build on such moments and establish himself as a consistent threat for the Red Devils.
