Manchester United are reportedly confident of securing the signing of Viktor Gyokeres, the prolific Swedish striker currently shining at Sporting Lisbon.

The Red Devils face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester City, but believe their new manager, Ruben Amorim, could tip the balance in their favor.

Gyokeres, 26, has been in sensational form this season, netting 24 goals in just 19 appearances and 67 goals in 69 matches since his €20 million move from Coventry City to Sporting in the summer of 2023. His outstanding performances, including three hat-tricks this season—one notably against Manchester City—have solidified his reputation as one of Europe’s most in-form forwards.

Competition Heats Up

Manchester United’s attacking struggles this season have heightened their interest in Gyokeres. New manager Amorim, who coached the striker at Sporting before moving to Old Trafford, has avoided commenting on the potential transfer. “Viktor Gyokeres is a Sporting player,” Amorim said. “I hope he continues his great form and success there.”

Despite his reserved tone, Amorim’s influence could be pivotal in swaying Gyokeres to join United, especially with Sporting reportedly open to selling the striker for a fee of £65 million. Arsenal and Manchester City, however, remain in the race. Incoming City sporting director Hugo Viana, also from Sporting, could play a key role in their pursuit.

Support and Skepticism

Gyokeres has drawn praise from former Sweden international Anders Limpar, who has mentored him since his early career. “He’s a hardworking forward who scores a lot of goals and never spares energy,” Limpar said. “Seeing him at Arsenal would be amazing.”

However, not everyone is convinced Gyokeres would thrive in the Premier League. Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has cautioned his old club against pursuing the Swedish star, advocating instead for a proven forward like Harry Kane. “United need players who can deliver under pressure,” Saha said. “If you can spend £120 million on Harry Kane, do it tomorrow.”

The January Window Awaits

With the January transfer window fast approaching, the race to sign Gyokeres is expected to intensify. Whether Manchester United’s confidence, Arsenal’s ambition, or Manchester City’s connections will win out remains to be seen. The decision could shape the balance of power in the Premier League title race.
