Manchester United are exploring a potential reunion with Benfica’s Alvaro Fernandez during the January transfer window.
The 21-year-old left-back, who joined Benfica permanently in 2024 after a successful loan stint, has emerged as a serious candidate for the Red Devils.
United are actively seeking to bolster their left-back options and are running out of time before the window closes.
While they continue negotiations with Lecce over Patrick Dorgu, Fernandez has become their backup plan if a deal for Dorgu falls through.
Reports from the Daily Mail suggest that Ruben Amorim’s Benfica side is debating whether to activate their £15m buy-back clause for Fernandez, which remains valid until January 2026.
Meanwhile, United scouts recently assessed Fernandez’s performance during Benfica’s clash with Casa Pia.
Fernandez, who originally moved to Old Trafford from Real Madrid‘s academy in 2020, never made a first-team appearance for United.
Instead, he gained experience through loan spells at Preston North End, Granada, and Benfica before making a permanent switch to Portugal.
Now, with Fernandez becoming one of Benfica’s standout players this season, United may act swiftly to secure his return.
His current contract includes a €50m release clause, a figure United might want to avoid should rival clubs take notice of his rising performances.
The Red Devils, with additional financial flexibility following Antony’s loan move to Real Betis, may also revisit their pursuit of Dorgu.
Their initial bid of £16.8m plus £4.2m in add-ons was rejected, but a second offer could be in the works.
Fernandez’s potential return to Old Trafford would add depth to United’s defense and bring back a familiar face who has flourished since departing.
