Manchester United are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements, and Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta has emerged as a potential target. The French forward has been in prolific form, scoring 19 goals last season and continuing his impressive run with eight goals in his last ten matches. His recent brace against United only strengthened their interest. The Red Devils have sent scouts to monitor his performances over the past three games.

Ruben Amorim’s side has struggled for goals this season despite spending over £100m on Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. Both strikers have managed just five league goals between them, leaving United searching for a reliable goalscorer. Viktor Gyokeres, another target linked with the club, appears unwilling to join unless United qualify for the Champions League. Currently sitting 14th in the Premier League, their only realistic route to Europe’s elite competition is by winning the Europa League.

There is growing belief at Old Trafford that Mateta could be a smart, cost-effective signing. Amorim favors a 3-4-3 system, and the Palace striker’s work rate and physicality would suit that setup well. Despite United’s decline in recent years, Mateta reportedly views the club as one of the biggest in the world and is open to the move. Palace, having signed him for just £11m in 2022, would make a significant profit if they choose to sell this summer.

However, Palace will be without Mateta for the next few weeks following a horrific injury suffered in their FA Cup victory over Millwall. The striker was kicked in the head by Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts, requiring oxygen on the pitch before being rushed to the hospital. His absence is a blow for Palace as they push for a strong finish to the season.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal and England winger Paul Merson has urged United to pursue Mateta. He believes the striker offers exactly what the struggling team needs—strength, work rate, and consistent goal-scoring ability. Merson criticized United’s reluctance to sign players from clubs like Palace, insisting Mateta is currently performing at a higher level than both Hojlund and Zirkzee.

United’s focus remains on rebuilding their attack under Amorim, and Mateta could provide an affordable solution. The club has been linked with several big-money signings, but with their struggles in the league, attracting top-tier talent may prove difficult. A move for Mateta could be a pragmatic approach as they look to reshape their squad.

With the summer transfer window approaching, United’s striker search will intensify. If they fail to secure Champions League football, they may need to pivot toward more realistic signings. Mateta’s proven Premier League record and availability at a reasonable price could make him an attractive option.
