Arsenal legend Ian Wright has voiced his concern over the future of Jakub Kiwior, suggesting that manager Mikel Arteta may no longer trust the £20 million defender.
The Poland international, signed from Italian club Spezia in January 2023, has been sidelined in Arsenal’s last seven Premier League games, fueling speculation about his standing in the squad.
Kiwior, capable of playing both as a center-back and left-back, was once viewed as a promising addition to the team.
However, his extended spell on the bench has cast doubt over his role under Arteta. Speaking on The Kelly and Wrighty Show, Wright described Kiwior’s predicament as “worrying” and hinted at a potential fallout between the player and the manager.
“If you’re Kiwior right now, you’re probably thinking it’s done,” Wright remarked, highlighting the lack of faith Arteta has shown in the defender. The issue came to light when Arteta opted for a defensive reshuffle during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw against Aston Villa, following an injury to key center-back William Saliba.
Rather than turning to Kiwior, Arteta moved Jurrien Timber from right-back to center-back and positioned Thomas Partey at right-back. Wright questioned these choices, suggesting that Declan Rice might have been a better fit for the temporary defensive adjustment.
Kiwior’s continued absence raises serious questions about his long-term future at the Emirates. Despite being under contract until 2028, his lack of involvement indicates he may need to consider moving elsewhere to reignite his career.
Meanwhile, Arteta remains optimistic about Saliba’s recovery ahead of Arsenal’s critical Premier League clash with Manchester City on February 2.
“The last few days, he was feeling much better, but this game [against Aston Villa] came a little too early for him,” Arteta explained.
As Arsenal gears up for their Champions League fixture against Dinamo Zagreb and a Premier League game against Wolves, Kiwior’s exclusion remains a major talking point, further amplifying doubts over his future with the club.
