Mikel Arteta hails Thomas Partey’s stunning performance in Arsenal’s Champions League win

Mikel Arteta has labeled Thomas Partey as a “massive player” for Arsenal following the Ghanaian midfielder’s commanding display in a 5-1 Champions League rout of Sporting CP on Tuesday night.

Arsenal delivered a scintillating performance, securing three first-half goals through Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, and Gabriel Magalhaes.

Sporting attempted a second-half comeback with Gonçalo Inacio finding the net, but Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard sealed the victory for the Gunners.

At the heart of Arsenal’s midfield, Partey orchestrated the game with precision and authority, earning high praise from his manager.

“I think it’s one of the best performances I have seen from him, especially the way he’s dominated the game,” Arteta said of Partey’s contribution. “That’s the level he can play. He’s progressing. This year, he’s been so consistent as well. He’s a massive player for us.”

With the victory, Arsenal moved up to seventh in the Champions League table, reinforcing their status as serious contenders. Arteta was asked if the win could be considered a statement to other top sides in the competition.

“For sure, the performance was there,” Arteta responded. “When we’ve played big teams like PSG or Bayern, we were exceptional, although some mistakes cost us.

“Now it’s Inter, now it’s this level. That’s the level we have to cope with and make it happen. It creates belief, and in the next match, the players will be better prepared. Consistency is key because the ability is there.”

Arteta also highlighted the impact of having a nearly full squad at his disposal, a significant change from earlier in the season when Arsenal had limited players available for training.

“A lot has changed since the international break,” he explained. “We were training with 11-12 players for a long period, so they couldn’t train and play effectively.

“Now, almost everyone is fit and available. It’s true that we are still managing certain players, but their level is rising. I have no doubt we have the right ability to be a really good side.”

With players regaining fitness and confidence, Arsenal look set to build on this commanding victory as they navigate the challenges of the Champions League and domestic campaigns.
