Mikel Arteta has conceded that Arsenal are “missing” Gabriel Magalhaes after the Brazilian defender’s absence was felt in the Gunners’ 1-1 draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Gabriel, sidelined by a persistent knee issue, was also unavailable for Arsenal’s midweek victory over Manchester United. His absence, alongside those of Riccardo Calafiori, Ben White, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Oleksandr Zinchenko, left Arsenal’s defensive options severely limited.

In his post-match press conference, Arteta admitted Gabriel’s absence was significant, saying: “Yes, we missed him. But I’m really pleased with the performance of Jakub [Kiwior]. We had to adjust the whole unit, with Jakub and Jurrien [Timber] in unfamiliar roles and Thomas [Partey] as a full-back. Jorginho also stepped in and performed excellently.”

Looking ahead to Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Monaco, Arteta expressed hope for reinforcements but deferred to the medical team. “I hope Gabriel, Zinchenko, and Calafiori can return, but it’s a question for the doctors. We’re missing many players in the backline, but the team’s attitude and performances have been positive.”

The draw with Fulham was marred by late drama, as Bukayo Saka’s 89th-minute goal was ruled out by VAR due to Gabriel Martinelli being offside in the buildup.

Reflecting on the disappointment, Arteta said, “That was tough emotionally. We fought hard and thought we had the winner, only for it to be taken away. Gutted, because we deserved to win from start to finish.”

Arsenal now turn their focus to Monaco, aiming to secure a much-needed victory amid ongoing injury challenges.
