Mohamed Salah has reportedly agreed to a new two-year contract with Liverpool, securing his future at Anfield for the near term. The 32-year-old has been in sensational form this season, netting 15 goals and providing 12 assists in all competitions.
However, his previous contract situation left room for uncertainty, as Salah’s deal was set to expire at the end of this season, meaning he could leave as a free agent.
Despite his stellar performances, Salah has hinted that this could be his final season at Liverpool. Following his team’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City last Sunday, the Egyptian forward dropped another clue about his possible departure.
“Honestly, it’s in my head,” Salah said. “Until now, this is the last City game I will play for Liverpool so I was just going to enjoy it.” He also spoke fondly of the atmosphere at Anfield, adding, “Hopefully we just win the league and will see what will happen.”
Salah and Liverpool have now come to terms on a new two-year deal. The agreement is reportedly a compromise after the club initially offered only a one-year extension, while Salah had been holding out for a three-year contract.
Former Arsenal and England midfielder Paul Merson has voiced concerns over offering Salah a long-term deal.
“We’re hearing two years with a year option to Mo Salah. That’s a long time,” Merson stated on Sky Sports. While he acknowledged Salah’s exceptional form, Merson warned about the potential risk of a lengthy contract.
“I’d give him 300-400 grand a week now because he’s doing the business, but in two-and-a-half years’ time, that’s a lot of money to be giving someone if they’re not doing the business then.”
Salah’s new deal ensures his stay at Liverpool for at least the next two years, but the debate about his long-term future continues.
Given his high performance levels and the potential risks associated with long-term contracts for older players, Liverpool’s decision to offer a two-year extension signals their desire to retain one of the best forwards in world football.
