Former Nigeria international Mutiu Adepoju has thrown his full support behind Augustine Eguavoen, urging the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint him as the permanent head coach of the Super Eagles.

Eguavoen, who has been in temporary charge of the team since September, guided Nigeria to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a solid campaign in the qualifiers. The Super Eagles won three matches, drew two, and suffered one defeat.

While the NFF is reportedly considering a foreign coach to lead the national team, Adepoju—who also played alongside Eguavoen during their international careers—believes the former defender has earned the right to stay in charge.

In an interview with Brila FM, Adepoju praised Eguavoen’s work with the team, stating, “He has done well and is still doing well. Qualification for AFCON was one of the major goals, and he has achieved that.”

Adepoju emphasized the need for continued support for Eguavoen, suggesting that the NFF should back the coach and allow him to continue his work.

“He has been getting things done, and I would rate him highly,” Adepoju added. “Let’s keep supporting him. He’s proven he can manage the team.”

Eguavoen’s future as Super Eagles head coach remains uncertain as the NFF deliberates on their next steps, but with AFCON qualification in the bag, his case for the full-time role seems stronger than ever.
