Neville described Vinicius’ response as “classless” and “outrageous,” suggesting that the Real Madrid forward disrespected Rodri, a player known for his influence on both his club and national team.
Many had expected Vinicius to clinch the award after playing a pivotal role in Real Madrid’s Champions League and La Liga successes. However, a leaked report hinted that Rodri, who shined in Manchester City’s Premier League campaign and led Spain to Euro 2024 victory, was set to win.
In response, Real Madrid canceled their appearance at the Paris awards ceremony, a move seemingly in protest. This action left the club’s Men’s Club of the Year award uncollected.
Vinicius, reportedly upset by the outcome, expressed his frustration with organizers, stating, “I’ll do it 10x if I have to. They’re not ready.” The Brazilian forward even had to cancel a planned celebration in Madrid, a gathering intended to mark his anticipated victory.
Neville expressed his disappointment, pointing out that Rodri’s exceptional consistency and pivotal role made him a well-deserved winner. He emphasized that Rodri represents the ideal “players’ player,” whose quiet leadership and skillful play embody qualities all should admire.
Neville noted that during Rodri’s absences last season, City’s performance faltered, underlining his value to the team.
According to Neville, Vinicius should have celebrated Rodri’s achievement by attending the event and congratulating him, an action he believes would reflect true sportsmanship.
He also suggested that Real Madrid’s decision to boycott the ceremony reflects an entitled attitude, especially given the multiple awards the club’s players received.
Neville added that Vinicius’ talent is undeniable and that his time to win the Ballon d’Or will come, but respect for fellow players remains paramount.
