Newcastle Faces Key Decisions with Nick Pope’s Return Amid Southampton Trip

Nick Pope is edging closer to a Newcastle return after a knee injury sidelined him for over a month. The England goalkeeper, last seen in the Magpies’ 4-2 loss to Brentford on December 7, could feature in the squad for their away game at Southampton this Saturday.

Newcastle has thrived in Pope’s absence, securing nine consecutive wins before a 4-1 setback against Bournemouth last weekend.

Manager Eddie Howe expressed optimism about Pope’s recovery but remained tight-lipped on whether the keeper or Martin Dubravka would start.

“There’s a chance he’ll be in the squad,” Howe shared during Friday’s press conference. “He’s been training with the group, and it’s fantastic to see his energy and positivity back. He’s done some excellent work this week.”

While Pope’s return boosts morale, Callum Wilson remains unavailable due to a hamstring injury. However, Howe is hopeful for the striker’s comeback in early February.

“Callum’s progressing well, and we’re ensuring he’s fully prepared before rejoining the group. His return would be a massive lift for us,” Howe added.

The team’s preparations for Southampton may face disruption from Storm Eowyn. Howe admitted travel plans could shift, with the team potentially flying on Saturday morning if Friday’s flight is deemed unsafe.

“A long bus journey could stretch to 12 or 13 hours, so flying is the better option if it’s safe,” Howe explained.

As Newcastle looks to bounce back from their Bournemouth defeat, Pope’s return and a focused squad could prove pivotal against Southampton.
