The 32-year-old England international had only returned to Premier League action on November 25 after battling back and hamstring issues.
Despite managing four substitute appearances this season, his latest setback will keep him out until at least mid-February.
The Daily Mail reports that this new injury, unrelated to his previous hamstring issue, occurred during his cameo against Brentford on Saturday.
Scans have revealed a serious strain, adding to Newcastle manager Eddie Howe’s headaches during a packed December schedule.
Newcastle faces five critical fixtures before the year ends, starting with a Premier League clash against Leicester on Saturday.
They also have a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Brentford and league games against Ipswich, Aston Villa, and Manchester United.
Wilson, although goalless since May, would have been a valuable rotational option to support Alexander Isak.
Wilson’s injury history raises doubts about his future at Newcastle. Out of contract in the summer, the former Bournemouth striker’s inability to stay fit – coupled with his age, as he turns 33 in February – makes a renewal unlikely.
Last season, Wilson managed just nine Premier League starts, and his current absence adds to Newcastle’s woes, with Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth, and Sven Botman also sidelined.
After collecting only two points in their last four games, Newcastle is desperate to reverse their fortunes against Leicester this weekend.
Howe will hope for a much-needed boost, with midfielder Joe Willock potentially returning to the squad.
