Eguavoen, who recently led Nigeria to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, emphasized the need for a swift decision as the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers approach.
“All hands must be on deck; we want to qualify for the World Cup,” Eguavoen told Kennis FM. “March is just around the corner.
If we need to make changes, it must happen quickly. The new coach needs time to settle in, exchange ideas, and plan the way forward. The earlier, the better.”
Despite the NFF’s ongoing efforts to appoint a foreign coach, Eguavoen has voiced his preference for a local option.
“We should stay at home for the choice of head coach,” he suggested. “The technical crew can be expanded, but a home-grown coach understands the situation better and feels the pulse of the people.”
The NFF’s decision will be crucial as the team gears up for the next stage of their World Cup qualification journey.
