Peter Fregene, a legendary Nigerian footballer, has passed away at the age of 77, surrounded by his wife, Tina, and two of his children. The former goalkeeper, known for his agility and sharp reflexes, died peacefully after a prolonged battle with illness. His passing was confirmed by Segun Odegbami, a former captain of the Green Eagles and fellow 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner.
Odegbami shared the news on Sunday, noting, “A few minutes ago, Peter ‘Apo’ Fregene, OLY, former goalkeeper for Nigeria’s Green Eagles, who has been on life support for the past one week, passed on to meet his creator. He died quietly in the presence of two of his children and his devoted wife, Tina.”
Fregene earned the nickname “Apo” during his illustrious career in the 1960s and 70s, renowned for his quick movements and impressive goalkeeping skills. He represented Nigeria at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico and was a key figure in the nation’s football history.
In the months leading up to his death, Fregene had been battling health issues, raising concerns within the football community. His treatment at Obule Medical Centre in Delta State was made possible through the support of three generous Nigerians following an appeal from Odegbami.
Odegbami expressed gratitude for the support received during this difficult time, saying, “On behalf of all generations of Nigerian footballers, Olympians, sports persons, his family, friends, fans, and a few incredible Nigerians that quietly rallied round and, with their support, prayers, and the will of the creator of the Universe, kept him alive until this night, I say a big ‘thank you.’”
Despite the efforts to save him, Fregene’s condition deteriorated, highlighting the ongoing neglect faced by many retired athletes in Nigeria. Odegbami voiced his disappointment with the government for not establishing a welfare scheme to support sports veterans in their later years.
In a heartfelt farewell, Odegbami concluded, “Good night, ‘Apo’. Rest, my friend, rest in peace, finally!” Fregene’s legacy will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those he inspired and the football community he cherished.
