Manchester United have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Nuno Mendes, as the Portuguese defender has decided to remain with Paris Saint-Germain and is expected to sign a new contract.
Mendes, who joined PSG from Sporting CP for £34 million in 2022, had been a priority target for United to strengthen their left-back position.
The 22-year-old initially appeared open to a move after rejecting an earlier contract proposal from PSG, fueling speculation about his potential departure.
United’s interest in Mendes was rooted in his strong relationship with Ruben Amorim, who gave the defender his first-team debut at Sporting in 2020.
Mendes played a pivotal role under Amorim the following season, helping Sporting secure both the Primeira Liga and the Taça da Liga titles.
However, according to French outlet L’Équipe, Mendes has now reversed his stance on leaving PSG.
The report states that PSG head coach Luis Enrique was instrumental in persuading Mendes to stay, emphasizing the player’s importance to the team’s future plans. Mendes is expected to extend his contract, which currently runs until 2026.
United have faced similar setbacks in their transfer pursuits this season. The club was linked with PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani, but he has since joined Juventus on loan.
Additionally, Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, another target to bolster United’s left side, appears likely to sign a new deal with his current club.
With financial constraints impacting United’s ability to secure marquee signings, the club may consider player sales to fund squad improvements.
Prominent academy talents such as Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho have already attracted attention, with Chelsea and Bayern Munich reportedly interested in Mainoo, while Chelsea have also inquired about Garnacho to enhance their attacking options.
As United looks to navigate their financial and squad-building challenges, the focus may shift to alternative solutions to reinforce their defense and other key areas.
