Former Super Eagles captain Jay Jay Okocha has hit out at Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini for his harsh criticism of Ademola Lookman, calling the coach’s remarks an overreaction.
Gasperini sparked controversy after Atalanta’s 3-1 home defeat to Club Brugge on Tuesday, labeling Lookman the “worst penalty taker” following his missed spot-kick.

The comment quickly drew backlash, with Lookman himself calling it “disrespectful.”
In response to the growing criticism, Gasperini later clarified that he did not intend to offend the 27-year-old winger. However, Okocha believes the manager was unfair in his assessment of Lookman’s abilities.
“I think Gasperini overreacted by calling Lookman the worst penalty taker,” Okocha told Mozzart Sport. “He seems to have forgotten the incredible contributions Lookman has made to Atalanta.”

The Nigerian legend also pointed out that many top players have missed crucial penalties without being singled out in such a manner.
“Many world-class players have missed decisive penalties without facing such extreme criticism, so why is Lookman being treated differently?” Okocha questioned.
He further stressed Lookman’s importance to the team, warning that Atalanta could struggle without him.
“In my opinion, if you take Lookman out of Atalanta, the club could struggle and even risk relegation,” Okocha added.
Lookman has been a key player for Atalanta since joining from RB Leipzig, playing a crucial role in their attack.
Despite the penalty miss, his contributions remain invaluable, and Okocha’s comments reflect growing support for the Nigerian winger amid the ongoing controversy.
