Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina has been sidelined for Nigeria’s matchday six encounter against Rwanda in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Aina, 27, sustained a minor injury during Thursday’s 1-1 draw with the Cheetahs of Benin Republic. The full-back started the match but was substituted in the 83rd minute, making way for Bright Osayi-Samuel.

Following the game, Aina was released to return to Nottingham Forest for further assessment and recovery, ruling him out of Monday’s clash against the Amavubi at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Impact on the Super Eagles

The Super Eagles have already secured their qualification for the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco, but Aina’s absence could test the team’s depth in their final group-stage fixture.

Head Coach Augustine Eguavoen now faces the task of adjusting his defensive lineup as Nigeria aims to finish their qualification campaign on a high. With Bright Osayi-Samuel available to fill the void, fans will hope the team maintains its momentum.

The Injury and Aina’s Recent Performance

The injury occurred during Nigeria’s hard-fought draw against Benin, where the Cheetahs shocked the Super Eagles with an early goal. Aina was part of the defensive setup that held firm, allowing Victor Osimhen to equalize in the dying minutes.

While the injury is described as minor, the decision to release Aina highlights the team’s precautionary approach, especially with club commitments on the horizon for the Nottingham Forest defender.

Upcoming Match Details

The Super Eagles are set to face the Amavubi of Rwanda on Monday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. Despite having already qualified for AFCON 2025, the team will look to conclude the group stage with a statement performance.

With Aina out, the focus shifts to other players stepping up to ensure a solid defensive display. Bright Osayi-Samuel, who replaced Aina against Benin, is expected to start.

Looking Ahead

As the Super Eagles prepare for this “dead rubber” match, fans remain optimistic about the team’s form heading into the AFCON finals. Aina’s absence, while significant, presents an opportunity for others to shine and strengthen the squad’s overall depth.

Nigeria’s football faithful will be hoping for a spirited display in Uyo to cap off a successful qualification campaign.
