Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has suggested that Erik ten Hag is concerned about Rasmus Højlund’s workload, after the young striker was benched for United’s Europa League clash against Fenerbahce.
Højlund, who has been a key figure for United since his summer arrival, has played regularly across multiple competitions, raising concerns over his fitness and fatigue.
Speaking after the match, Hargreaves emphasized that the decision to rest Højlund likely stems from Ten Hag’s desire to manage the striker’s physical demands carefully. “I think Ten Hag is worried about Højlund’s workload,” Hargreaves said.
“He’s played a lot of games in a short period since joining, and given his age and the intensity of Premier League and European football, the manager is probably being cautious.
Højlund has quickly become an important part of Manchester United’s attack, impressing with his speed, strength, and finishing. However, with the club facing a packed schedule and the demands of both domestic and European competitions, Ten Hag may be opting to rotate his squad to avoid overburdening the 20-year-old striker.
Hargreaves acknowledged that while Højlund’s presence on the pitch is critical for United, ensuring his long-term fitness is equally important. “Højlund is young, and his body is still developing. You don’t want to burn him out, especially in a season where United are fighting on multiple fronts,” he added.
